Psychotherapy of the Heart

'Metta Therapy' is the term used by Megan Thorpe to describe her approach to psychotherapy.

Metta is a word from the ancient Indian language, Pali. It is used in Buddhism and is translated as loving kindness. In Metta Therapy this sense of loving kindness, for oneself and for others, is used to bring about healing.

In some therapeutic work the term unconditional positive regard , as coined by the psychotherapist Carl Rogers, is used. Metta, or loving kindness, is similar. It is a state of warmth and friendliness towards oneself and others, despite any pain, suffering or distress that one may feel.

Learning to develop metta towards self and others is the key to accepting our experience for whatever it may be. Having done this, we can then see more clearly whether, and how, we may choose to change.
